What is a deep tissue massage?
Deep tissue massage uses slow, firm strokes and sustained pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle and fascia. Unlike a relaxation massage, it targets chronic tension, knots and specific problem areas. It's firm work — you should feel pressure and a 'good' ache, but it shouldn't be sharply painful.
Does deep tissue massage hurt?
It should feel intense but bearable — a 'good pain', not sharp or unbearable. Mild soreness for a day or two afterwards is normal, similar to after a workout, and occasional light bruising can happen but shouldn't be routine. Tell your therapist to ease off at any point; effective deep tissue doesn't have to be painful to work.
Deep tissue vs Swedish massage — what's the difference?
Swedish massage uses flowing, moderate-pressure strokes for relaxation across the whole body. Deep tissue uses slower, firmer pressure to release deep knots and chronic tension. Choose Swedish to relax and de-stress; choose deep tissue for stubborn, specific muscle problems. Many therapists blend the two.
Deep tissue vs sports massage — which do I need?
Both use firm pressure. Deep tissue works chronic, everyday tension anywhere in the body; sports massage is targeted around specific muscle groups, training and movement, often with stretching. If you're training for something, sports massage; if you carry general deep tension, deep tissue.
